The good news is that Illinois is no longer the most heavily spammed state in the country.
According to a report released this week by a unit of anti-virus software maker Symantec, the Land of Lincoln dropped to No. 5 from last year's top ranking.
The bad news is that Illinois residents are still receiving a huge amount of unwanted e-mails pitching prescription drugs, prospective suitors and international finance schemes. And most states are getting more spam than ever.
In 2008, Illinois had a spam rate of 92.1 percent, meaning 9.21 of every 10 e-mails received by businesses were spam. This year the state's rate is 91.6 percent. The top recipient of spam? Idaho, which shot from No. 44 to No. 1 with a rate of 93.8 percent.
Even the most spam-free states are faring badly. Puerto Rico has the least spam but still clocks in at 83.1 percent, followed by Montana at 85.7 percent. ( Hawaii, whose beloved snack food has gotten maligned in the e-mail age, falls in the middle of the pack at 89.4 percent.)
