Thirty years after he became a fugitive to avoid a prison sentence for having sex with a teenager, Academy Award-winning director Roman Polanski asked a judge Tuesday to dismiss the case.
Another Hollywood star using his clout and power in trying to get out of being held responsible for his sexual deviance. Then the United States film academy rewards him with an academy award and millions in box office sales yet if that was someones son or daughter that was "raped" and there was public outcry or the public cries for him to return to making movies? I don't get this, it is no wonder that shows like America's Most Wanted and John Walsh are still on the air. They profile these people then it becomes the bragging rights of men like Polanski to glamorize this type of abuse on children. How many federal, state, and local programs receive funding to be proactive in the prevention of child exploitation? As long as there are men and women like this who continue to get press for their criminal behavior then all is right with the world?
The victim in the case, Samantha Geimer, now 45 and a mother of four, has said repeatedly and publicly that she thinks Polanski was treated unfairly and expressed a desire for the case to be resolved without prison time.
Reached at her home in Hawaii, she said she welcomed an opportunity to finally end the case. "It's been a long time," she said. "I don't wish for him to be held to further punishment or consequences."
It makes sense that the victim in this case would want it to end. Many rape victims want it to end and refuse to report the crime or willingly provide testimony as it furthers the trauma. California had to pass a law to keep rich pedophiles from buying their way out of court proceedings.
Roman Polanski appears the first though that has managed to get someone to create a film to turn justice on its head. One can only wonder how many others are out there or what deals may have been litigated with a check.
The victim has said that she wants it to end because she has been harassed by the press for all these years. Everytime Polanski made a film or was in the news, the press harassed the victim for a comment. She wants it to end for her sake. The fact that her name was put out by the press as soon as she turned 18 is despicable.
The main thing to remember is that Polanski pleaded guilty and then fled. He drugged and raped a 13-year-old. He took sexually explicit nude pictures of her while unconscious, and also had intercourse with her while she was unconscious. If he were a regular person, such as a teacher or clergyman, and had done this, there would be such outrage in the public. But because he is talented and famous, people are making excuses for him and acting as if what he did was no big deal. Sick. I have no sympathy for Polanski.
