ST MICHAEL'S Grammar is one of Victoria's top private schools, with an indoor swimming pool, student trips to Japan and 19th century mansions for classrooms.
But, quelle horreur, the school's drama studio seats just 150. It didn't have a theatre. So it bought one.
Not just any old theatre. St Michael's has paid $3.8 million for the Astor, one of Australia's last single-screen cinemas, on the corner of Chapel Street and Dandenong Road, St Kilda.
The good news for cineastes is that it will maintain its program of classic and independent films. (Screening this week are Death at a Funeral, Paris, Je T'Aime, and Pan's Labyrinth.)
