China shouldn't fear missile defence system: Nelson

Defence Minister Brendan Nelson says China has nothing to fear from a missile defence system being developed by the United States, Japan and Australia.

Dr Nelson is flying to Japan today after attending the Asia-Pacific security summit in Singapore.

A top Chinese general told the meeting that the proposed anti-missile system has the potential to destabilise Asia.

But Dr Nelson says Australia wants to help build the system to shoot down ballistic missiles because of the threat posed by North Korea.

"I don't think China should be unduly concerned," he said.
